The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof Florence Obi has directed the immediate discontinuance of payment of all unauthorized charges in the institution .
Accordingly, the University authority and has directed that all such monies collected be refunded to the affected .
A release issued by the Registrar of the university, Mr Gabriel Egbe disclosed that the Vice Chancellor has further directed the immediate stoppage of payments for Computer Based Test (CBT) examination in GSS, Payment for Library Registration and payments for studio in the Department of Science Laboratory amongst others.
The release also stated that the Vice Chancellor directed that monies of students who paid for those charges should be refunded immediately while refund of money to EDC students who were not trained in 2019/2020 continues till management further directs.
The Registrar in the memo said the Vice Chancellor on behalf of management frowned at the unpleasant development and has accordingly directed the removal of the Head of Department of Computer Science and with a charge to students in the faculties of Physical and Biological Sciences to overtly resist the purchase of textbooks as a condition for course registration.
The release informed that Management in the wake of this incident has set up a three- man team under the leadership of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof Michael Okom to be aided by the Dean of Students Affairs and Chief Security Officer to investigate all reported cases of extortion and collection of unauthorized charges by lecturers, Heads of Departments and Heads of units and to report its findings within 48 hours.
Students of the University have been advised to remain calm and be rest assured that management will partner with them to put an end to all forms of extortion and intimidation.
