A socio-political support group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River, christened ‘APC Unity Forum,’ has conferred honours on some Nigerians, including the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Bassey Otu, a frontline politician and businessman, Dr David Okon, Senatorial Candidate, South, Asuquo Ekpenyong Jnr, amongst others.

The event, which took place in Calabar, weekend, saw a large turnout of senior members of the political class, business tycoons and many party members, including women and youths.

In his remarks, the Chairman of event, Elder (Dr) David Okon, said the recipients of the honors were noted personalities who had sacrificed their time, energy and resources for humanity and explained that the honour was aimed at boosting their resolve to do more.

Dr Okon, who doubles as the Chairman of APC Elders Forum in Cross River State, described the governorship candidate of the party as the Biblical Abraham who God used to salvage the land of Cannan from curses and added, “with Prince Bassey Otu at the saddle, we will experience the flow of milk and honey.”

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of APC Unity Forum in the State, Comrade Ekanem Effiong said the aim of the group was to bring back all members of the party together for the purpose of winning next year’s election.

He said “our structures from the state to the polling unit levels are drawn from the often used parlance, ‘old and new members’ and this is aimed at cementing the bond of unity of our party members.

“All these are deliberate measures to produce a party that is solid, formidable and irrepressible against all tides and elements for optimal advantage and result. We are out to ensure that all our candidates are supported through massive mobilization to win the forthcoming elections.”

In his response, shortly after the conferment of the honour as Patron of the group, Senator Otu commended the APC Unity Forum for the gesture. He noted that the responsibility of moving the State and its people to a new direction comes once in a while and that Cross River people have all come to the realisation that it was time to move forward.

Senator Otu further lauded the group for adding the word ‘Unity’ to its name and noted that “there is no progress without unity.” He said the group’s motto, which is ‘Fresh Ideas,’ was visionary and prophetic ‘because when there is unity, fresh ideas would definitely come to move the people forward.”

The governorship hopeful therefore called on all members of the group as well as other party members to unite so as to reposition Cross River and take the State to another height for the good of humanity.

Pillar Today reports that other personalities who were equally honoured as Patrons included Etinyin Asuquo Ekpenyong OON, Elder (Dr.) David Effiong Okon; Etubom (Dr.) Nya Eyoma Asuquo and Rt. Hon. Chief Alex Egbona.

Others were Sir. Victor Abang, Mr. Eric Anderson; Otuekong Engr. Ben Akak; Chief (Mrs) Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita; Hon. Asuquo Ekpenyong Jnr; Rt. Hon. Chief Orok Otu Duke; Capt.
